800hp c6 build advice Empty 800hp c6 build advice

Post  460bronco August 31st 2013, 10:23 am

Hello all,  I'm looking for advice on what hard parts are needed to rebuild a c6 that will handle 800hp.  I've, previously just took my tranny to a local shop, but several deals have been a hassle lately and it's time to dive in to one of these rebuilds myself.  I've looked at Broader and they have a 500hp rebuild kit but I'm going to be a good bit north of that point.   So, lay it on me, what parts do you guys use at this power level and what's the best manual to coach me through the basics?

Thanks,
Jon

If you follow all of Frank's advise and do all of the mod's he recommends, your c6 will handle more than 800hp Twisted Evil

Why do you need that? A 3 clutch can be converted to 5 with a new snap ring groove

I was under the impression you could get 8 in the factory 4 clutch direct drum. Any truth to that?

in a 4 you can get 7 &7 using Red altos power pac that uses thinner steels and clutches pt# 026757HP and a relocated snapring groove and a back cut pressure plate so the pressure plate does not hit the forward drum

800hp c6 build advice Empty 4 plate clutch drum

Post  manofmerc September 10th 2013, 6:22 am

Bronco you cant really pipoint a year for usage of the 4-5 plate forward clutch drum .A close estimate would be any 70-80 era c6 .If there is a local transmisson parts supplier near you go and see what they have available .Most trans. parts suppliers have cores on hand for parts like you need .Gregaust is also correct in that someone with a lathe and common sense can modify your clutch drum to hold 4-5 clutchs .I dont know where you live (I am in Ga.) if you cant find or modify what you have please pm me and maybe I can help you .Doug

Does anybody have the part # for a kit with the red altos and kolene steels that I need to do the build-up frank describes?  Just want to be sure I have all the clutches I'll need to do the basic 5 clutch upgrade in each of the drums.  Also need suggestions for a good re-pair manual with good pics and any torque specs or critical clearances.  This will be my first c6 build and I need a good guide!  Also, what are the specialty tools needed?  Do I only need a press to allow removal of the snap rings from the drums, or are there other specialty tools needed?

-one other thing-  I currently have a reverse pattern full manual valve body.  I'm unsure of the make.  In most of the complete rebuild kits I see different levels of shift kits.  Are these just to improve the shifting of a stock valve body, or am I in good shape in that department since I already have a full manual valve body?

Thanks,
Jon

Are you hoping to run a trans brake on it at any point? I was never able to get a c6 to hold up, so I called Coan and they built me a nice little pro-glide. BEST investment I ever made, no more on the trailer trans rebuilds since.

Bronco911--I plan to have frank build me a transbrake one day for another engine package, but for now it will be the non-TB reverse manual VB for me.  I'm really pumped about building up my C6.  I'm waiting on the Bad Shoe Productions video to arrive at the moment.  After watching it, I'm going to tear my transmission down and see exactly what I have and exactly what I will need to build it to Frank's specs.  With the power he is feeding through a C6 on the dragstrip, I have all the faith in the world that it will live behind my powerplant on the dirt.

800hp c6 build advice Empty Different types of Red Alto's and steels?

Post  460bronco October 9th 2013, 2:35 pm

Another question---- Are there several different thicknesses of the red alto and kolene steels to purchase? After looking at the link Frank posted, It looks like the 026757HP kit must have thinner clutches and steels to fit more in the drum. Am I on the right track, or just all confused?

Thanks,
Jon

After searching around a little more, I see a lot of people saying the thinner frictions and steels don't hold up as well as the thicker ones.  Has anyone had personal experience with this?  I ordered the HP packs for low/reverse, forward, and direct.  There is a 30 day exchange policy if I need to send these boys back for the thicker plates.  Please let me know what you guys think.

800hp c6 build advice Empty High/reverse clearance

Post  460bronco November 16th 2013, 8:11 pm

For the high/reverse clutch---- I'm machining a new snap ring groove that will allow me to run 7 of the thin alto HP frictions and steels. Will .072-.078" clearance be ok for the 7 clutches?

Thanks for all the help so far!!!!

You know I keep reading about thin clutches and steels not lasting. I've never had any issues using thin steels or frictions . Follow Franks specs on the clearance and you'll be sweet. That .072-078 should be fine

I haven't had issues with the thin clutches per say but have seen the thin pressure plates bowing when trying to fit a bunch of clutches. It was very obvious when the outer edges of the clutches were worn near the snap ring and the inner was in good shape, one pressure plate was even warped .080". I would rather use a step-cut stock pressure plate than the thin ones.
